Twin Beardless Wheat
Soft White Spring Wheat
Triticum aestivum
Twin is a beardless soft white spring wheat with medium maturity and moderately stiff straw. It is well suited to forage, hay, grazing, small-grain mixtures, and other Western agricultural applications.
About Twin Wheat
Twin is a soft white spring wheat valued for its beardless head, medium maturity, and utility in forage-oriented production systems.
The variety produces moderately stiff straw and can be grown as a straight stand or incorporated into mixtures with other small grains and forage species.
Its awnless head makes Twin particularly attractive where the crop is intended for hay or forage rather than solely for grain production.
The Twin Variety
A Western Soft White Spring Wheat
Twin was developed cooperatively through the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station and USDA breeding program and was released by Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and USDA in 1971.
Twin is classified as a soft white spring wheat with medium maturity, moderately stiff straw, and an awnless or beardless head.
The variety has remained useful in Western small-grain production, particularly in forage and hay systems where a beardless wheat is preferred.
Forage Characteristics
Why Plant Twin Beardless Wheat?
Twin provides the fast establishment and biomass of a cereal grain with a beardless head suited to forage-oriented management.
Beardless Head
Twin is an awnless wheat, making it well suited to forage and hay programs where long, stiff awns are undesirable.
Fast Establishment
Spring wheat establishes rapidly under favorable planting conditions and can provide useful early biomass and soil cover.
Forage Production
Twin can provide substantial vegetative growth for hay, grazing, and mixed small-grain forage systems.
Medium Maturity
Medium maturity provides useful flexibility when coordinating harvest or grazing with other forage crops.
Good Straw Strength
Moderately stiff straw helps Twin maintain useful standability as the crop develops.
Mix Compatibility
Twin can be used with oats, barley, triticale, peas, and other forage species in diverse small-grain mixtures.
Establishment
Drill Twin Wheat Into a Firm Seedbed
For a full stand, Twin Wheat can be seeded at approximately 100 lb/acre. Seeding rates should be reduced when Twin is included as one component of a multi-species forage or cover crop mixture.
A planting depth of approximately 1–1½ inches provides good placement under typical conditions. Seed should be placed into adequate moisture with good seed-to-soil contact.
Planting rate and depth may need to be adjusted for soil texture, moisture, planting equipment, seed size, and field conditions.
Where Twin Fits
Forage & Agricultural Applications
Hay
The beardless head makes Twin a useful small-grain option for forage and hay production.
Grazing
Can provide cool-season annual forage for appropriately managed livestock grazing.
Forage Mixtures
Combines well with other small grains, forage peas, and complementary forage species.
Cover Crop Programs
Rapid cereal growth can contribute biomass, soil cover, rooting, and residue in agricultural systems.
Forage Wheat
Why Choose a Beardless Wheat?
Wheat varieties differ in head type. Twin is classified as awnless or beardless, which makes it particularly useful in forage-oriented programs.
When harvested at the proper stage, beardless small grains can provide a practical cereal component for hay and mixed-forage production.
