Phleum pratense

A Proven Cool-Season Hay & Forage Grass

Timothy is a perennial bunchgrass widely used for hay, pasture and forage mixtures. It performs best in cool conditions with adequate moisture and is particularly useful where high-quality grass hay is an important production goal.

Why Use Timothy Grass?

A dependable perennial forage option for hay, irrigated pasture and cool-season forage mixtures.

Quality Hay

Timothy is widely valued as a hay grass and can produce palatable forage when harvested at the appropriate stage of maturity.

Horse Forage

A well-known grass hay option for horses and also suitable for other classes of livestock when properly managed.

Cold Tolerance

Timothy is well adapted to cool environments and offers strong winter persistence in areas suited to cool-season perennial grasses.

Forage Mixes

Can be planted with compatible legumes and other forage species to build diversified hay and pasture mixtures.

Agronomic Uses

Where Timothy Grass Fits

Timothy fits best in hay fields, irrigated pastures and cool-season forage mixtures where adequate moisture is available. Because it has relatively poor drought tolerance, it is better suited to irrigated, higher-rainfall or cooler environments than dryland forage systems.

Establishment & Management

Manage Timothy for Persistence & Forage Quality

Timothy performs best where adequate soil moisture is maintained without prolonged standing water. Hay quality and feeding value are strongly influenced by stage of maturity, so harvest timing should be matched to the intended forage objective. Pastures should be managed to avoid continuous heavy grazing and to allow plants adequate recovery between grazing periods.

California Fit: Timothy is generally a better fit for irrigated pasture, higher-elevation areas and cooler or higher-rainfall environments than for hot, dry, non-irrigated sites.
