Best Performance with Consistent Moisture
Kentucky Bluegrass performs best on fertile, well-drained soils where adequate moisture is available. Established plants spread through rhizomes and can develop a dense, persistent stand. Growth is strongest during cooler portions of the year, while hot or dry summer conditions can cause plants to slow growth or become dormant.
California Fit: Kentucky Bluegrass generally performs best where irrigation is available or where cooler temperatures and adequate rainfall reduce summer moisture stress. For hotter or lower-input California turf sites, a turf-type tall fescue or a blend of tall fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass may provide better summer performance than Kentucky Bluegrass alone.
