Nitrogen-Fixing Cover Crop Legume
Crimson Clover
A productive annual clover for nitrogen fixation, soil health, pollinator habitat and multi-species cover crop systems
Crimson Clover is a cool-season annual legume widely used in cover crop systems for nitrogen fixation, biomass production, soil coverage and spring flowering. Its combination of agronomic value and pollinator appeal makes it a versatile component in orchards, vineyards, field crops and diversified cover crop mixtures.
Agronomic Benefits
Why Plant Crimson Clover?
Crimson Clover combines nitrogen-fixing potential with productive cool-season growth and attractive spring bloom.
Nitrogen Fixation
When properly inoculated and established, Crimson Clover forms a symbiotic relationship with rhizobia that allows it to biologically fix atmospheric nitrogen.
Biomass Production
Productive cool-season growth adds above- and below-ground plant material to diversified soil-health systems.
Pollinator Habitat
Its distinctive crimson flower heads provide attractive spring floral resources when the stand is allowed to bloom.
Soil Coverage
A well-established stand provides living ground cover that can help protect the soil surface from erosion and winter weather.
Where It Fits
Best Uses for Crimson Clover
Crimson Clover is especially useful where growers want a flowering annual legume that contributes nitrogen fixation, ground cover and plant diversity within a cool-season cover crop program.
Establishment & Management
Managing Crimson Clover
Crimson Clover performs best when establishment, inoculation, moisture and termination timing are matched to the field and production objective.
Establishment
Plant into a well-prepared seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact. Seed should be placed relatively shallow and consistent soil moisture should be maintained during emergence.
Inoculation
Use the appropriate rhizobial inoculant where needed to support effective nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation. Coated seed options can simplify establishment programs.
Bloom Management
Allowing the stand to reach flowering can increase pollinator value, but termination timing should still fit water use, crop operations and the following planting schedule.
Termination
Termination strategy depends on the cropping system and may include mowing, incorporation or other field-specific methods. Avoid allowing unwanted seed production where volunteer plants would interfere with the next crop.
Planting Guide
Crimson Clover Seeding Rate
Weaver Seed recommends approximately 20–25 pounds per acre for Crimson Clover when planted as a primary stand.
When Crimson Clover is used as a component of a multi-species cover crop mix, the component rate should be reduced to account for the other species in the blend and the intended role of the clover.
