Blando Brome
Blando Brome (Bromus hordeaceus) is a cool-season, reseeding annual bunchgrass widely used in California dryland forage, range and erosion-control plantings. It establishes rapidly with fall moisture, produces seasonal forage and can provide quick soil cover on suitable disturbed or low-input sites.
Why Plant Blando Brome?
Blando Brome is particularly useful where rapid fall establishment, seasonal forage and soil protection are needed under California-style dryland conditions.
Rapid Establishment
Blando Brome establishes quickly when fall rainfall provides adequate moisture, helping develop early seasonal soil cover.
Dryland Forage
Provides cool-season forage in compatible annual range and dryland pasture systems.
Erosion Protection
Fast vegetative development helps cover exposed soil and can reduce erosion risk on suitable sites.
Reseeding Potential
When allowed to mature, Blando can reseed and contribute to future annual stands under favorable conditions.
Range Improvement
Can be used in appropriate annual-range reseeding projects where quick establishment and forage production are priorities.
Low-Input Adaptation
Blando is capable of establishing on relatively low-fertility sites and is well suited to Mediterranean-type seasonal rainfall.
Planting Blando Brome
For a straight stand, use approximately 10–15 lb per acre. Reduce the rate appropriately when Blando Brome is used as one component of a range or erosion-control mixture.
Plant into a firm seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact. Shallow placement is preferred rather than burying the seed deeply.
On non-irrigated California sites, fall planting ahead of dependable seasonal rainfall generally provides the best opportunity for establishment.
Seeding Rate Note: Actual rate can vary with seed lot, pure live seed, planting method, site conditions and whether Blando is planted alone or in a mixture.
Best Uses for Blando Brome
Dryland Pasture
Useful as a seasonal annual grass in dryland forage systems dependent on fall and winter rainfall.
Range Improvement
Can provide rapid annual grass establishment in compatible range reseeding projects.
Erosion Control
Quick establishment makes it useful where temporary vegetative cover is needed on disturbed or exposed soil.
Forage Mixtures
Can be included with compatible grasses and legumes where rapid annual forage and groundcover are desired.
Manage Around the Annual Growth Cycle
Blando Brome is a reseeding annual, so grazing and mowing timing affect both current forage production and future stand regeneration.
Plant With Rainfall
On dryland sites, coordinate planting with dependable fall moisture to support germination and early growth.
Avoid Early Overuse
Allow seedlings to establish adequately before applying significant grazing pressure.
Allow Seed Set When Desired
If natural reseeding is part of the management objective, allow enough plants to mature and produce seed.
Prevent Unwanted Spread
Where reseeding outside the intended area is undesirable, mow, graze or otherwise manage the stand before mature seed production.
Important: Blando Brome is an introduced annual grass and should not be represented as a California native species. It can reseed aggressively in suitable environments, so use it where that growth habit fits the management objective.
