The five-species formulation combines different brassica growth and rooting characteristics while maintaining the nutrient-scavenging function associated with brassica cover crops.

Nutrient Scavenging

Brassicas can take up residual soil nitrogen and other available nutrients while actively growing, temporarily retaining those nutrients within plant biomass during the cover crop period.

Rapid Biomass

Mustards, radish and canola are capable of producing substantial vegetative growth when planted into favorable conditions. Strong biomass production is particularly important when the crop will be managed for biofumigation.

Biofumigation Potential

Mustards and other brassicas contain glucosinolates that can form biologically active compounds when plant tissue is thoroughly disrupted. The actual effect depends heavily on species, biomass and termination management.

Agronomic Note: Biofumigation is a management process, not simply a result of planting brassicas. Results vary with species, biomass, growth stage, soil conditions, target organism and how the crop is terminated.

Management Determines the Biofumigation Effect

Brassica tissues contain glucosinolates. When plant cells are broken, these compounds can be converted into biologically active products such as isothiocyanates. Maximizing this process requires more than simply growing a brassica cover crop.

Build Adequate Biomass Greater plant biomass provides more plant tissue available for the biofumigation process.
Finely Disrupt Plant Tissue Mowing, chopping or macerating the crop increases plant-cell disruption and promotes the reactions involved in biofumigation.
Incorporate Quickly Rapid incorporation after tissue disruption can help retain volatile compounds within the soil rather than allowing them to escape.
Soil Moisture Matters Adequate soil moisture supports the chemical reactions and movement of biofumigation compounds through the treated soil zone.
